The Galaxy Note 7 is already official, with preorders already underway. That means the Galaxy S8 is going to be the next big thing when it comes to Samsung mobile rumors, but a report from South Korea indicates that Samsung might never make the Galaxy S8 you desire.

One of the features the Galaxy Note 7 (pictured above) lacks is a flat screen. Unlike the Galaxy S7 series that has a flat and edge model, the Galaxy Note 7 only comes with a curved display, much like the Galaxy S7 edge. However, the new Note does not have the word “edge” included in its official product name, suggesting that edge displays may become the norm in Samsung’s future smartphone design.

Samsung is now reportedly considering eliminating flat smartphones from its future devices, with the Galaxy S8 being on the list of devices that might lose a flat version.

“Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen),” Samsung’s mobile business chief Koh Dong-jin said in an interview in New York last week, The Korea Herald notes.

The Galaxy Note 7, which only comes in a curved display version, may serve as a test for Samsung, and could convince the company to ditch the flat Galaxy S8 next year. The phone is expected to arrive at some point in early 2017, likely at the upcoming Mobile World Congress edition. There’s plenty of time for Samsung to make up its mind, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see Galaxy S8 leaks showing both curved and flat versions leading up to the press event. After all, flat models of the Galaxy Note 7 were featured in many leaks that proved Samsung experimented with this regular phone design as well, before deciding to only launch an edge version of the Galaxy Note 7.

“Samsung will not likely get rid of the flat-screen Galaxy S smartphone model right away, but if the market response is positive with the Note 7, it would surely serve as a cue for Samsung to focus only on the Edge model,” an unnamed market watcher told the site.
