The group encourages Rift users to massively adopt it
The technology company Oculus recently announced that the Windows 10 operating system is now part of the minimum configuration for the use of its virtual reality helmet Rift. As a result, Windows 10 becomes the only Microsoft "VR ready" OS recommended by Oculus.
To justify its new position, Oculus said Microsoft, the Windows editor, has already announced the schedule announcing the scheduled end of general support for its Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 OS. It would therefore be more advisable for the subsidiary of Facebook to recommend to all users of its Oculus Rift the adoption of Windows 10.
In addition, the next update of the new Rift Core 2.0 software suite is expected to come with several new features that require the latest Windows operating system to work. Oculus also insisted that 95% of the owners of its virtual reality headset are already running Windows 10.
The company said: "Rift owners using a PC that does not run Windows 10 may have problems with incompatibilities with certain applications and games. They will still be able to use already-known features, including notification responses, friend interactions, device management, and launching applications that do not require Windows 10. "
"The move to Windows 10 ensures that we will be able to provide the best performance standards for Rift owners, while meeting industry standards," she adds.
For those who have already purchased this headset or plan to buy it knowing that they use it or will use it on a less secure system based on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, there is however no reason to panic for the moment! Machines running Windows 7 and 8.1 can still be used to run an Oculus Rift virtual headset, knowing that upgrading from one of these OS to Windows 10 is no longer free. However, they will not be able to take advantage of new features and future applications dedicated to this device.
Note in passing that the virtual reality helmet Oculus Go is now available for sale in Europe. Unlike virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift, this new model does not need to be connected to a computer or smartphone to work.
