Manchester City took their summer spending past the £150 million barrier on Tuesday morning with the £47.5 million capture of John Stones from Everton.

The England defender has signed a six-year contract with City that will tie him to the Etihad Stadium until June 2022 after months of protracted negotiations with Everton finally concluded shortly before midnight on Monday

Confirmation of the deal came more than an hour after Uefa published the latest Champions League squad lists which listed Stones as a City player.

City had to submit their Champions League before the midnight deadline and only just completed a deal for Stones in time for the 22-year-old to be included, which means he will be available to face Steaua Bucharest in the play-off tie, the first leg of which is in the Romanian capital a week on Tuesday.

Stones becomes City’s seventh significant signing of the summer after Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan, Nolito, Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Marlos Moreno and takes manager Pep Guardiola’s spending to £155.05 million, a similar outlay to rival Manchester United’s £145.7 million on Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly.
