Samsung’s partnership with McAfee for the security software on their devices has officially been expanded to include things like PCs, smart TVs, and the Samsung Galaxy S8 flagship smartphone family. McAfee’s various cross-platform security solutions, integrated across multiple types of Samsung devices, are meant to help create a comprehensive web of protection across all of a user’s internet-connected devices. There are a few different McAfee products involved in this deal, but the bottom line with all of them is that they’re meant primarily to help protect a user against hackers and malware. Even if a user doesn’t choose a Samsung device for one use case or another in their home, having the protection on board in their Samsung devices can help consumers to avoid threats.
The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are protected by McAfee’s VirusScan functionality. This bundle begins with units shipped in April of 2017 onward, but the app can be downloaded and used in much the same way on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, as well as the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, and Galaxy Note 5. The functionality is also free forever on these devices. The McAfee LiveSafe program that will be preloaded on Samsung PCs, however, ships with a 60 day free trial intact, after which users will have to pay up or give up the extra protection. Finally, McAfee Security has found its way onto Samsung’s smart TV lineup, and is free for life. Like the other options on the list, it’s available in Samsung products dating back to 2015. For now, it’s only available in the US and Korea, but more countries will be put on board as time goes on.
This announcement comes just after McAfee completed a survey about security risks. Around 44% of respondents expressed fear around the idea of thieves getting into their personal financial information, such as bank passwords. 38% of respondents in the survey said that they were afraid of the possibility of identity theft. McAfee’s comprehensive security solutions help to cover both of these bases and many more on the digital front. While each app is protective enough in its own right, they shine when combined with their counterparts on other devices in the network.
